India, China, Russia to Sign Pact on Tiger Conservation

Thirteen countries, including China, Russia and India, will in New Delhi to take stock of their efforts to save the big cat, and exchange notes with each other in a global initiative for tiger conservation.
The meeting will also see India and Russia signing a Joint Resolution of Agreed Actions on Tiger and Leopard Conservation, along with highlighting the global challenges and changing trends in protecting tigers from poaching and habitat destruction.
India is going to chalk out its medium-term action plan and priority activities in tiger conservation as part of its commitment. Hosted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the three-day meet from May 15-17 will also take stock of the progress made in implementation of the Global Tiger Recovery Programme, of which India is a part.
The St Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation and the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP) adopted at the International Tiger Forum in Russia, November 2010, calls for convening regular high-level meetings to review the implementation progress of the GTRP and its national priorities (NTRPs).
The three-day meet is also going to have representatives from World Bank, Asian Development Bank and other funding agencies to discuss an action plan to ensure that by next year, the global tiger recovery programme does not have any gaps in funding.
India will be showcasing its success story, having increased the tiger population in several areas, decreased the threat of poaching and minimising interference in core areas of tiger reserves.
